Wednesday, October 4th was a busy day for Medicine Hat Public School Division officials, students and staff as the day featured a double-header ribbon cutting event at two of the Division's schools.

In the morning, Medicine Hat High School took the spotlight with a Grand Re-opening gala event to officially celebrate the completion of a $44M plus modernization process. The afternoon attention then shifted to the Grand Opening of Dr. Ken Sauer School, the Division's newest member in our family of schools.

Alberta Education Minister, David Eggen was the honoured speaker as he addressed guests and unveiled the Alberta Infrastructure plaques at both events. He then handled the ribbon-cutting duties at Hat High. Other government dignitaries attending both events included Medicine Hat MLA, Bob Wanner; Medicine Hat-Cypress MLA, Drew Barnes; City of Medicine Hat Mayor, Teg Clugston; and a number of municipal councillors.

All five Public School Board Trustees were also at both celebrations taking special pride in showcasing signs gifted by them for each school. Board Chair, Rick Massini addressed the respective audiences and together with Vice-Chair, Catherine Wilson Fraser, unveiled Board plaques recognizing each special opening along with Superintendent, Mark Davidson representing Medicine Hat Public School Division.

MHHS Principal, Boris Grisonich, was the Master of Ceremonies at his school and reflected on how badly in need of repair his school was before the modernization was approved in January 2014. He acknowledged the vision and efforts of Mr. Avi Habinski and Mr. Mark Jummun, both of whom worked in the Capital Planning Branch of Alberta Education at the time. He credits them, along with local administration, with being instrumental in the creation of a what ultimately became a new MHHS bearing very little resemblance to the old MHHS. Both men (Mr. Habinski and Mr. Jummun along with their wives) traveled to be at the event and were treated to a special school tour prior to the 10:30 event. He went on to thank Mr. Eggen for supporting the project and seeing it through to completion.

The afternoon proceedings at Dr. Ken Sauer School were MCed by school Principal, Jason Peters. The school's namesake, Mr. Ken Sauer and several members of his family took an active part in the celebration. As the honouree, a video tribute featuring interviews by friends, colleagues and family was presented. Dr. Sauer then took the stage to a standing ovation. He reflected on the value of working together with others which he noted was the key to making the Public School District a "Lighthouse" district model for others back in his time as Superintendent. Following his years of service on City council, he has been a relentless volunteer for many local events and causes. Dr. Sauer concluded his address by making a special plea to the school's young students to pledge to become good citizens.

Both schools offered tours of their wonderful new facilities to those who wished to do so.
